For a long time, the EU has been one of the important regions for poultry production, consumption and export in the world. Since 2018, the annual output of poultry products in the EU has been stable at more than 13 million tons. The EU imports chicken breasts and poultry products (high-value poultry products in the EU) from Brazil, Thailand and Ukraine, and exports its low value poultry by-products.

In 2021, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) began to sweep across Europe, and on Oct 3 this year, the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) warned that Europe is experiencing the largest avian influenza epidemic so far.

As of Aug this year, the EU's total poultry output was 7.465 million tons, a YoY decrease of 13.59%. As the largest poultry producer in the EU, Poland's total poultry output in the first eight months of this year was 1.551 million tons, a YoY decrease of 5.08%; Italy and Hungary were the most affected by the epidemic, the poultry output of Italy and Hungary was 677,000 tons and 267,000 tons respectively, down 26.73% and 25.21% compared with the same period last year.

Multiple factors, such as the avian influenza epidemic, the COVID-19, the rising feed cost and the energy crisis, directly affect the EU poultry industry. In the short term, the EU poultry output will continue to show a significant downward trend.

According to the latest statistics of the European Commission, from Jan to Jul this year, the total export volume of EU poultry products was 1.1167 million tons, a decrease of 4.82% compared with the same period last year. Among them, the export volume of Ghana, Ukraine and the Congo, the main export destination countries of EU poultry products, showed a significant downward trend.
