The prices of bone-in beef, and that of some boneless cuts, fell last week and butchers do not rule out that they will continue to fall, reported to Alfonso Fontenla, president of the Union of Meat Vendors (UVC). Depending on the cut, the trade, the equation of each butcher and the sales flow of each butcher shop, the drop was between 6 peso and 10 peso per kilo.

The prices of some beef parts in Uruguay have decreased from the end-Aug to early-Sept, mainly to the reduction of 6 pesos for the half carcass and the beef front part, while the prices of ribs and breast have not changed significantly. In Uruguay, beef prices have fallen for two weeks in a row, including a 10 peso per kilo cut in the price of beef products such as half carcasses.

The fall in price occurred “by several edges” Fontenla explained. first by the drop in the price of cattle for slaughter that, together with “a dollar that remains stable and even falling”, has helped the trend deepen for some cuts.

Live cattle prices in Uruguay have been falling since July. Uruguayan steers averaged $2.09 a kilo last week, the lowest since Feb.

Besides, China’s beef market consumption demand weakened coupled with the depreciation of RMB, resulting in the drop in export levels of Uruguayan meat to China, which drove down the prices.

Most butcher shops in Uruguay have lowered the price of most beef cuts to attract consumers and boost sales. These value adjustments have nothing to do with the entry of the roast with bone imported from Brazil, emphasized by Fontenla. Beef consumption in Uruguay maintains stable while pork and chicken increased slightly.
