According to data from GACC, China’s poultry meat imports in March 2023 amounted to 130,453 tons, a month-on-month increase of 17%. In Q1 of this year, a total of 338,867 tons were imported, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%. However, due to the announcement that "Relevant poultry products from related countries shipped prior to the date of this announcement must undergo strict quarantine inspection and laboratory testing and may only be released upon passing the quarantine inspection and laboratory testing", specific intervention of import volumes in the future requires continuous monitoring and observation.

The data in the chart shows that in March 2023, the main source countries for China's imported poultry products were Brazil (59,519 tons), US (26,089 tons), Russia (11,507 tons), Thailand (11,277 tons), and Argentina (8,193 tons), remain the top five countries in terms of import volume, accounting for 45.62%, 20.00%, 8.82%, 8.64%, and 6.28%, respectively. There was little change in the source countries for imports in March, these five countries still accounting for the top five imports of chicken meat in China.

In terms of imported chicken meat categories, frozen chicken paws accounted for the largest share of imports, reaching 53,686 tons, accounting for 41.15% of the total imports, with a month-on-month increase of 14.71% and a YoY increase of 0.51%. Frozen chicken wings (excluding wing tips) imported 34,366 tons, accounting for 26.34% of the total imports, with a MoM increase of 5.27% and a YoY increase of 37.39%. Frozen chicken nuggets with bones imported 33,952 tons, accounting for 26.03% of the imports, up 50.47% MoM and 37.50% YoY. Due to differences in Chinese and Western dietary cultures and prices, the top two by-product categories, paws and wings, together account for 67.49% of poultry meat product imports.

Overall, due to continued weak chicken meat consumption in the market after the Spring Festival, coupled with frequent import restrictions, the market is paying close attention to the event of imports reduced. However, from the chicken meat import data for Q1, actually imports in Feb and Mar showed consecutive increases. Nevertheless, taking into account the implementation details of the import restriction announcement, it’s expected that the estimated trend of reduced chicken meat imports in the future may perform well.
