Fernando Mattos, the minister of Uruguay's MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries), said that he will be invited to China in May, with a delegation to consult with the China on related economic and trade matters.

The Mujidigital said the visit to China will restart negotiations for the existing agreement on animal and plant health quarantine, which Hundreds of thousands of tons of agricultural and livestock products have been exported to China since the existing agreement was signed in 2018.

According to the assessment of Uruguay's beef production capacity and existing export volume to China, Uruguay still has potential to increase the export volume to China in the future. For example, shortening the pre-slaughter quarantine period from 90 days to 45 days, as well as more beef by-products, such as tripe and tongue, could also export to China.

He also highlighted the agricultural health condition in Uruguay, Uruguay has not had a case of foot-and-mouth disease for 22 years, which suffice to show that Uruguay has the capacity to provide adequate food safety guarantees for exports.

Uruguay's president recently said that Uruguay and China's economic and trade negotiations are continuing and the two countries are moving forward at a "slower" pace to finally sign the FTA. If the agreement is reached, the current 12% tariff rate will be further reduced, and is expected to continue to expand beef exports to China.
