Guangzhou city, China's manufacturing hub relaxed COVID prevention rules in several districts on Wednesday in an effort to implement rules authorities announced this month aimed at easing the burden of the strict zero-COVID policy.

Authorities in city districts including Haizhu, Baiyun, Panyu, Tianhe, Conghua, Huadu, Liwan, said in statements they were lifting temporary lockdowns.

One district, Conghua, said it would allow in-person classes in schools to resume and would reopen restaurants and other businesses including cinemas.

Guangzhou is a sprawling port city north of Hong Kong in Guangdong province, where officials announced late on Tuesday they would allow close contacts of COVID cases to quarantine at home.

The Panyu district is a distribution center of imported cold-chain pork and poultry products. It has undergone a lockdown in one month, resulting in a standstill in the imported meat market in South China.

Meanwhile, buyers are cautious to purchase meat products from overseas markets due to stagnant delivery and poor transportation.

It was once lifted before in mid-Nov, and the trading volumes are surging on that day. Based on some buyers' feedback, although some traders have sold out their products, they still hold a wait-and-see attitude to buy in new stock. It’s estimated that the lift of Panyu District will promote more circulations of products.
