China Mainland Mutton Imports Decreased Significantly in Q1-Q3 2022, Especially From NZ

China mainland imported 273,000 tons of mutton products from Jan to Sept 2022, with a YoY drop of 17.8% and the import value falling 12.8% year-on-year.

 

China mainland imported 273,000 tons of mutton products from Jan to Sept 2022, with a YoY drop of 17.8% and the import value falling 12.8% year-on-year.

 

The import of mutton fell first and then increased. From the perspective of monthly imports, the import volume in Jan was 38,000 tons, which dropped to 24,000 tons in June and then recovered to 29,000 tons in September, up 10.4% MoM and 1.8% YoY.

 

In the first three quarters of 2022, mutton imports mainly come from New Zealand, Australia and Uruguay, accounting for 57.4%, 38.8% and 3.0% respectively, 99.3% in total, down 23.3%, 3.3% and 45.8% respectively year-on-year.

 

The CIF import of mutton products shows a downward trend from Jan 2022, which was 36.4 yuan/kg in Sept, down 10.1% YoY. Among them, the imported frozen sheep meat with bone was 36.7 yuan/kg, down 9.2% YoY, and the imported frozen boneless sheep meat was 33.5 yuan/kg CIF, down 1.5% YoY.

 

Frozen bone-in mutton products accounted for the largest share of imports. In recent years, frozen bone-in and boneless mutton are the main imported mutton products. From Jan to Sept of 2022, 223,000 tons of frozen bone-in mutton and 16,000 tons of frozen boneless mutton were imported, accounting for 81.6% and 5.9% of the total imports respectively, 87.4% in total.

 

The import volume of breeding sheep was very small with a total of 542 breeding sheep imported from Jan to Sept, down 90.7% year-on-year, all from New Zealand.
